“A SON AT SEA”

A film by Alexis VAN STRATUM

After his depressive mother tries to commit suicide, Clement (28) suggests they spend a few days together at her seaside apartment to lift her morale. But Clement’s own life is at a crossroads: he and his pushy girlfriend are contemplating an imminent move to Montreal, where a big new job awaits him... And while at the coast, an encounter with a pretty young artist adds to Clement’s confusion.

How can Clement pull his mother out of her breakdown in a mere few days, while she inexorably seizes control of his life through her incessant emotional blackmail? Racked between the women he loves, how can Clement know what he really wants?

Alexis Van Stratum’s main themes are co-dependence, rejection, hysteria and deprivation.
He likes working along the fine line that crosses tragedy, comedy and pathos -- using (for example) a musical comedy sequence to offset the dramatic narrative.

“A Son At Sea” ("Avec ma mère à la mer") is Alexis’s debut feature film.
